The polyamory trap: can we discuss marriage equality for same-sex marriages without slamming the door on polyamory?

Jay Michaelson of Salon magazine faces the issue head on.

Newt Gingrich may have scored political points by refusing to talk about an ex-wife’s assertion that he asked that their marriage be “open,” but he also thrust polyamory into the national conversation.

This was new territory for many people, but not for LGBT advocates, who hear about it all the time. Won’t legitimizing same-sex marriage lead to legitimizing polyamorous relationships too? If two men can marry one another, why not one man and two women?  This argument is a favorite of former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, the so-called Christian right and the right-wing blogosphere.

Interesting points. Worth reading.

And may I again point out to Newt Gingrich that an open marriage requires trust, honesty, and informed consent by all parties. Sneaking around for years until you get caught is not open marriage or polyamory. It’s cheating, and it’s wrong.

Dear Newt Gingrich; When you keep spewing your bullshit about the sanctity of marriage and hence your opposition to gay marriage, you shouldn’t be “appallled” when someone wants to start the debate with a very relevant question about you wanting an open marriage while you were cheating on your wife.

Ex-WIVES. He dumped his first wife while she was in the recovery room after cancer surgery.
